FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Iowa State women and No. 17 men began action at the Tyson Invite in Arkansas and the BU Valentine Invite in Boston Friday. Two men posted the No. 2 and No. 3 3,000m performances in school history to highlight the day.
In Boston at the Valentine Invite, Said Mechaal raced to a blistering 7:45.03 in the 3,000m to set the second-fastest time in Iowa State history. Mechaal's time came just off Wesley Kiptoo's 2022 program record of 7:43.61, and is currently a top 20 performance in the nation.
Hours later in Arkansas, Silas Winders also had an elite 3,000m with a 7:45.21, a nearly four second best and the third-fastest performance in program history.
At the Tyson Invite weight throw, Cam Jones once again hit a mark over 70 feet with 71-4 (21.74m), thrown on his second attempt. Jones passed on the next four rounds and finished fourth in the stacked field.
Rachel Joseph recorded her first 400m time of the season clocking 52.58 to win her heat and finish 12th overall and as the ninth-fastest collegian.
In hurdles, Alec Carr qualified for semifinals in the invite section with his time of 7.96.
Multi-event athlete Thai Thompson leaped to a long jump indoor-best 23-10 (7.26m), just off his all-time best of 23-10 3/4. Thompson made it out of flight one with the mark to make the final.
Emanuel Galdino went sub four in the mile for the third time this season with 3:55.27, his second-fastest time. It is also the third-fastest mile time in program history. Galdino placed sixth in the fastest Valentine Invite heat behind Luke Houser, the 2023 and 2023 NCAA mile champion for Washington, competing for the Atlanta Track Club Elite.
Robin Kwemoi Bera crossed the finish line in 13:45.89 in the 5,000m finishing 27th overall among a field of pros in Boston. Two-time Olympic medalist Grant Fisher won the event with an indoor world record of 12:44.09.
The Tyson and Valentine Invite continue with event for Iowa State beginning at 10:45 a.m. with the men's shot put. Two weeks of indoor regular season remain before Big 12 Indoor Championships, with Iowa State next taking on The Arkansas Qualifier and Iowa Open Friday, Feb. 21.
