Leading Off
After winning its first midweek game of the season last time out, ISU will jump back into conference play as it heads to Stillwater to square off with its third ranked opponent of the season in No. 17 Oklahoma State. The Cyclones took last year's series, 2-1 and have won three of the last six games against OSU.
Iowa State enters the weekend after beating Kansas City 9-1 in five innings on Wednesday. For ISU, the game against KC broke up nine straight games of conference action. In their last ten games, the Cyclones are 7-3 and will look to maintain the positive momentum on the road.
Oklahoma State enters the weekend coming off of a tough setback to in-state rival Oklahoma, in a game that was played at Devon Park in OKC. The Cowgirls will be playing in just their seventh, eighth and ninth home games this weekend, as they currently have played at home just six times – the second-fewest amount in the league.
From the Notes:
Leading the Cyclones
Iowa State's top half of the order has done the majority of the heavy lifting this season and is led by a pair of freshmen at the top. Jessie Clemons and Sereniti Trice lead the team in hits and have done well to start the Cyclones off. Returning All-American Angelina Allen has a team-high 15 walks with two triples to go along with 37 hits and 19 RBI.
Rounding out the top of the order are another pair of newcomers – transfers Sydney Malott and Reagan Bartholomew. Malott has a team-best five home runs, tying her career single-season high. Bartholomew's 26 RBI lead the team, and she's tied with Malott for most home runs on the squad. After spending last season primarily as a pitcher, Tatum Johnson has also been a threat at the plate, leading the team in batting average with a .348.
In the circle, five Cyclones have seen action. Lauren Schurman leads the way with a team-low ERA of 3.02. Schurman has hurled 88.0 innings, a team-high, and owns 48 punchouts, also a team-high. Jaiden Ralston has six starts in 25 appearances with 33 strikeouts. Freshmen Abby Huhn and Sami Potvin have been solid, as each has multiple wins.
Overall, the Cyclones are hitting .279 and have produced 163 runs on 260 hits. The team has 85 extra-base hits with 148 RBI, while drawing 86 walks. ISU holds a collective 4.48 ERA and has allowed 287 hits in 222.0 innings of work.
Opponent Outlook
Oklahoma State touts a balanced attack at the dish, as seven Cowgirls are hitting above .300 on the season. Megan Delgadillo leads the team with 38 hits, while Rosie Davis has team-high 37 RBI. Amanda Hasler provides the most pop in the lineup, having tallied nine homers on the year.
Three Cowgirls have 20-plus runs scored, with Tia Warsop and Delgadillo leading the way. Warsop and Delgadillo have combined to steal 35 bases and Warsop leads the team in both batting average and on-base percentage.
OSU's pitching staff has become a two-player rotation, with Washington transfer Ruby Meylan leading the way with 125.1 innings pitched. Both Meylan and Katie Kutz have combined to pitch over 80 percent of the team's innings this season. Meylan holds a 1.56 ERA and 145 strikeouts.
Overall, the Cowgirls are hitting .309 and have produced 174 runs on 273 hits. The team has 79 extra-base hits with 152 RBI, while drawing 89 walks. OSU holds a collective 3.05 ERA and has allowed 187 hits in 220.0 innings of work.
Series History
Oklahoma State has dominated the series, as the Cowgirls hold an all-time edge of 82-28 over the Cyclones. However, ISU has been able to find success against OSU recently and has taken three of the last six contests – two of which came as part of a home series win over then-No. 5 Oklahoma State last season. The series win over the Cowgirls became the highest-ranked series win in program history.
