Ames, Iowa – The Iowa State tennis team had the pair of Stanislava Shulzhenko and Mari Paz Alberto Vilar advance to Sunday's Blue Draw Final in the Blue-Gray National Tennis Classic Saturday.
The tournament features two different draws, and each participating program has four players paired off in groups of two competing in separate draws. Each pair plays a doubles match against another school, then singles matches against the same pair. The pair that wins at least two of the three matches (doubles, singles, singles) advances in the compass bracket.
Shulzhenko and Alberto Vilar earned a spot in the Blue Draw championship by taking down Auburn's Ava Esposito and Alice Battesti, 8-6 in doubles. Alberto Vilar then fell to Esposito in singles, 6-3, 6-4, but Shulzhenko would pull through via third-set tiebreak and knock off Battesti, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (5).
Ashlee Narker and Julia Camblor couldn't replicate their success from day one, falling to Georgia Tech's Taly Licht and Olivia Carneiro in the Gray Draw semifinals. Narker improved her singles record to 2-0 this fall, though, defeating Carneiro, 6-4, 7-5.
The Cyclones are back in action on the final day of the tournament on Sunday.
