AMES, Iowa - Iowa State Swimming and Diving will head to Houston, Texas, for the Big 12 Duals, held January 16–17.
Coming off a strong road performance facing UNI and St. Thomas, Iowa State enters the weekend with momentum across both the swimming and diving events after earning multiple event wins and podium finishes to open the new year.
THE OPPONENTS - Big 12 Duals
The two-day meet will take place Friday and Saturday at the University of Houston, featuring Big 12 competition as the Cyclones test themselves against conference opponents in a dual-meet format. Teams competing at the meet include Cincinnati Houston, Iowa State, TCU, and West Virginia.
LAST TIME OUT - UNI, St. Thomas
Iowa State opened 2026 with a strong showing in Cedar Falls, led by dominant performances on the boards and in the distance freestyle events.
Maggie Bendell and Kate Mitchell set the tone early, as Bendell won the 1-meter event while Mitchell took the 3-meter title. The Cyclones also placed multiple divers in the top six on both boards, giving Iowa State an early advantage before the swimming events began.
In the pool, Carlotta Gazzola continued her standout season, sweeping the 1000 and 500 freestyle. Corinne Guist joined her in the distance events, adding podium finishes in both races. Grace Swoboda and Anja Peck also had strong performances for the breaststroke group, with Swoboda winning the 100 breaststroke and Peck taking the 200 breaststroke title.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR - Distance, Breaststroke and Diving
The Cyclones will look to carry their recent momentum into Big 12 competition, with several areas continuing to stand out.
The distance freestyle group remains a major strength, led by Gazzola and Guist after a strong 1-2 showing in the 1000 and strong performances in the 500 as well. In the breaststroke events, Swoboda and Peck have proven to be reliable scorers throughout the season, delivering multiple podium finishes for the Cyclones.
On the boards, Mitchell and Bendell give Iowa State a powerful advantage. Both divers had first place finishes in Cedar Falls, while the talent of the diving group allowed the Cyclones to place four athletes in the top six on the 3-meter board.
With the Big 12 Championships approaching, the Big 12 Duals offer an important opportunity for Iowa State to further their strengths and build confidence against conference competition.
