AMES, Iowa – The Cyclones (0-2, 0-0 Big 12) are back in Beyer Hall on November 6th & 7th for their first home meet of the regular season hosting the South Dakota Coyotes (1-0, 0-0 Summit League).
THE OPPONENT – South Dakota
This will be the 17th meeting between Iowa State and South Dakota since their first matchup in 1993. The Coyotes were the hosts last year in Vermillion where the Cyclones got the win with a score of 168-123.
South Dakota comes off the Coyote Extravaganza on October 30-31, hosting Northern Iowa, South Dakota State, St Cloud State (Minn.), and Augustana (S.D.). The Coyotes finished the meet in second place, just four points behind the victorious UNI Panthers.
LAST TIME OUT – Illinois
Iowa State returns to the pool after a loss against Illinois in Urbana-Champaign on October 16th & 17th.
Junior Grace Swoboda continued her perfect record in breaststroke this season, winning both the 100 & 200 Breast.
Senior Emma Kuhn found herself on the podium in the 100 Free and 100 Fly finishing second and third, respectively.
Junior Anja Peck also finished well in her events with a runner-up in the 400 IM and third place in the 100 & 200 Breast.
In diving, freshman Katie Malm continued to shine with runner-up finishes in both 1-meter and 3-meter, achieving NCAA Zone-cuts in both events. Jade Hazes and Abby Tollefson joined Malm, also making the Zone-cut in 1-meter.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR – Breaststroke, Freestyle, and Diving
Grace Swoboda looks to continue her winning streak with the potential of going 10-for-10 in breaststroke events this season. With Anja Peck and Matilde Geromin also in the mix, this breaststroke trio will be a tough test for South Dakota.
Against Illinois, Iowa State had five different freestylers finish in the top four in their respective events. Turning the top four finishes into podium finishes and the podium finishes into event winners in freestyle will be a key part in capturing the first win of the season for the Cyclones.
The divers will look to carry their momentum and make an impact on the boards with each athlete finding their stride in both events.
ON DECK – Hawkeye Invitational
Iowa State Swimming & Diving will turn their attention to preparing for the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City. The invite will be held from November 17-20 at the University of Iowa Natatorium where they will see tough competition and familiar faces.
