CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Iowa State (3-2) finished its weekend with a winning record at the Doc Halverson UNI-Dome Classic, as it bested both Butler (1-4) and UNI (2-3) to sweep its Sunday slate.
Iowa State recorded its second 16-run game of the tournament in game one against Butler, beating the Bulldogs by a score of 16-4. Six Cyclones finished with multi-hit games, and ISU had 17 hits as a team.
The Cyclone bats didn't cool in game two, as ISU used a 13-hit performance to best in-state school UNI by a score of 5-3. Four Cyclones finished with multi-hit games, and the ISU staff worked to strand eight Panthers.
Iowa State 16, Butler 4 (5 Inn.)
ISU scored ten runs in the first two frames, leading to a second blowout victory of the Doc Halverson tournament against Butler. ISU finished with 17 hits, its most this season and most since April of last year.
Jessie Clemons and McKenna Andrews tied for a game-high with three hits apiece. Reagan Bartholomew, Kadence Shepherd, Sydney Malott and Kasey Kane would each finish with a pair of knocks. Tatum Johnson had a game-high four RBI, Shepherd had three, and three other Cyclones had a pair.
Ava Mullen got the start for ISU, her second of the season. Lauren Schurman (1-1) would enter in relief, fanning a pair, before Hailey Holtz closed things out in her first collegiate appearance.
Five Bulldogs finished with hits, as Hailey Conger led the squad with two. Katie Petran (0-2) got the start, allowing eight runs on seven hits.
How it Happened
The Cyclones got on the board first with an explosive first inning. After Butler stranded a pair, Clemons led off with a double for the Cyclones. In the very next at-bat, Johnson tanked a ball well past the right field fence to notch her first homer of the season and put ISU up 2-0. A third-straight extra-base hit, this time courtesy of Bartholomew, put ISU back in business. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Bartholomew was driven in on a two-out single from Malott.
The Bulldogs put two on the board in the second, loading the bases with a pair of walks and a hit by pitch. A second hit by pitch would bring one in, and a single would score the second.
The Cyclones would then plate seven in the bottom of the frame. Three straight singles from Poole, Andrews and Clemons started things off. A catcher's interference and a walk would plate two before a fielder's choice scored a third. Shepherd and Malott followed with consecutive singles to plate a pair. ISU would score two more runs before inning's end to make it 10-2.
Some quality two-out hitting in the third resulted in two more runs for the Cyclones. With a runner on second and two outs, Bartholomew drew a walk. Ford followed with a walk of her own, and the bases were loaded. Shepherd cranked a two-bagger into left center, scoring two, and putting ISU up 12-2.
ISU added four final runs in the fourth, as it again began the inning with three straight singles. Kane, Andrews and Clemons provided the singles, loading the bases, for Johnson. A fielder's choice from Johnson scored one, while a Bartholomew double scored another. With runners on second and third, Ava Wilmes stepped in for her first collegiate at-bat. Wilmes would send a single up the middle to plate both runners, earning both her first hit and RBI.
Butler plated two runs against Hailey Holtz in the fifth, who got her first taste of collegiate action as the game ended with a 16-4 score.

Iowa State 5, UNI 3
Iowa State overcame a two-run deficit with a four-run fifth frame to down UNI and close out its weekend. Timely hitting and clutch defense kept UNI from rallying as the Cyclones moved to above .500 for the first time in the early season.
Reagan Bartholomew continued her torrid start to her senior year, collecting three hits for the second-straight game. Ford, Poole and Andrews joined her with multi-hit games. Bartholomew had a pair of doubles, as five of ISU's 13 hits went for extra bases.
In the circle, Liv Palumbo got her second start of the weekend. Palumbo went for three and a third innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits. Ava Mullen would relieve her, finishing the fourth, before Lauren Schurman (2-1) closed things out and picked up the win.
The Panthers were limited to just two extra base hits, with Sykora Smith and Brynn Acton claiming a pair of doubles. UNI starting pitcher Maddy McDermott gave up five runs on 11 hits.
How it Happened
Iowa State took an early lead in the first inning, as it used some timely two-out hitting to plate the game's first run. A Bartholomew double was driven in by Ford, who laced a single into left field to put ISU up, 1-0.
The 1-0 Cyclone lead stood until the fourth frame, when UNI put a three-spot on the board. A pair of RBI doubles and a passed ball allowed UNI to take its first lead of the contest, 3-1.
The Cyclones had an impressive response, scoring four runs in the following inning. Bartholomew led off with a single and Ford followed up with a double to put a pair in scoring position. A Shepherd sac fly brought in Bartholomew to make it a one-run game before a Malott single scored Ford to tie it up. Following a Kane double, ISU again had runners in scoring position. Tiana Poole came to the plate and drove a single back up the middle to score one and put the Cyclones in front. A wild pitch would score Kane and put ISU on top, 5-3, headed to the bottom of the inning.
ISU limited UNI to just one hit across the last three innings, as the Panthers stranded three and fell to the Cyclones by two runs.
