Iowa State’s hurdles squad have continued to improve throughout his tenure. The leading light has been Eric Fogltanz, who has earned All-America honors and has qualified for the USATF Outdoor Championships twice. During the 2020 indoor season, Fogltanz used his unattached campaign to compete at the USATF Indoor Championships in the 400m dash, claiming the bronze medal.
On the women’s side, Keira Christie-Galloway became the first Cyclone to sweep the Big 12 60m hurdles and 100m hurdles titles across the indoor and outdoor seasons. She went on to earn Second Team All-America honors outdoors and be a member of the Canada Senior National Team at the Pan American Championships.
Katarina Vlahovic had an incredible indoor season in 2020, as she notched six personal bests in the 60m hurdles, concluding the campaign with a bronze medal at the conference championships.
His first season on the Cyclone coaching staff saw him take Eric Fogltanz to All-America honors in the 400m hurdles and to qualification for the 2018 USATF Outdoor Championships.
During his time at Syracuse, Rizzo produced a strong hurdles program, tutoring a trio of All-Americans in the hurdles events, which included the 2016 and 2017 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships runner-up in the men’s 60-meter hurdles in Freddie Crittenden III. Crittenden was a five-time All-American under Rizzo’s guidance and picked up a pair of ACC titles.
Rizzo’s time at Syracuse included two more All-Americans and another ACC Champion. He helped guide the SU men to the 2016 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championship, with four of his runners making the final of the 60-meter hurdles.
Prior to Syracuse, Rizzo was an assistant coach focusing on sprints, jumps and relays at Richland High School in Johnstown, Pa., with his one year there seeing him guide an athlete to the Pennsylvania State Meet record in the triple jump.
Rizzo has a background in strength and conditioning, working in the strength and conditioning department at Memphis in 2011 under the now-Head Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Tom Myslinski. During his undergraduate studies at Pittsburgh, Rizzo interned in Pitt’s strength and conditioning department.
