Matt Lange is in his second season as Recruiting Coordinator/Assistant Coach at Iowa State. Lange came to Iowa State after two seasons in the same position at George Washington.
Lange is responsible for recruiting in all areas and events within the program, along with on-campus recruiting logistics and assisting Sudbury in building Iowa State Track and Field/Cross Country’s brand. For cross country, Lange serves as an assistant coach for the women’s team.
Lange’s work with the ISU women’s program saw the Cyclones finish ninth at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, the program’s first top-10 team finish since 2014. In addition, Lange helped the ISU women produce six All-Big 12 and four All-Midwest Region performers. The success continued onto the track, as his work with the Cyclone women helped lead ISU to fifth at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships, the team’s best finish since 2014.
In recruiting, Lange helped put together a strong incoming class for 2022-23 that will help continue Iowa State’s trajectory upwards. Among the high school student-athletes Lange helped bring to Ames, the group combined for 41 state championships in their senior campaigns.
Lange completed his second season as an assistant coach at George Washington in 2020-21, helping the Colonials build some historic success within the program. The GWU women finished in the top-3 of the Atlantic 10 in cross country each season, having three student-athletes earn All-Conference honors each season.Â
The GWU women also made history during outdoor track season, with Lange’s work with steeplechasers Margaret Coogan and Kathryn Nohilly seeing them qualify for the NCAA East Preliminaries, marking the first time GWU had two student-athletes qualify for Regionals in the same event.
Lange competed for four years at Furman before completing his collegiate career as a graduate transfer at George Washington. In his season at GWU in 2017-18, Lange became one of the first two student-athletes in program history to qualify for the NCAA East Preliminaries, making it in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. He earned All-A-10 honors with a sixth-place finish at the conference cross country championships, set the school XC record at 10K at the Mid-Atlantic Regional meet and was a member of the Colonials’ school-record 4xMile team.
At Furman, Lange helped the Paladins qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships in 2015 as a team and earned All-Southern Conference honors in cross country in 2016. While at Furman, Lange actually made a trip to Ames to compete in the Iowa State Classic in the open 3,000 meters, which he finished third in a personal best 8:18.91.
Lange earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Furman in Communications Studies, and his Master’s from George Washington in Tourism Administration with a concentration in Sport Management.
