Jen Malcom returned to Iowa State in a coaching capacity as assistant coach in February 2016 and will begin her seventh season in 2022. The 2022 campaign will be Malcom’s fourth as associate head coach, as she received the promotion following the conclusion of the 2018 season.
Malcom, who played for ISU from 2006-08, previously coached at Tennessee, Virginia Tech and Arkansas State.
ISU’s middle blockers have been outstanding in recent seasons, with Malcom’s efforts leading to a pair of All-Big 12 middles in 2019 in Candelaria Herrera (First Team) and Avery Rhodes (Second Team). Herrera led ISU with a .314 hitting percentage while Rhodes bounced back from a season-ending injury in 2018 to lead Iowa State in blocking with 110 total blocks.
Malcom’s work with Herrera has helped guide the Argentine to get to represent her senior national team, which she has done across the last two years, peaking with Herrera making the Argentina Women’s Volleyball National Team that competed at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Malcom was critical in the development of Grace Lazard into a two-way force and a two-time All-Big 12 middle. Lazard posted 2.41 kills per set at a .279 hitting percentage in 2017, while leading ISU with 121 blocks and followed with 2.84 kills per set at .341 and 126 blocks in 2018. Malcom was also responsible for helping transition Avery Rhodes into the starting lineup right before Big 12 play in 2017, helping Rhodes to second in the Big 12 at 1.28 blocks per set, and Big 12 All-Freshman Team honors.
A challenging 2018 season saw Malcom have to assist in a couple of major lineup changes. Following injuries to Rhodes and Meegan Hart, Malcom helped bring Candelaria Herrera into the starting lineup, with the Cyclone sophomore concluding her season with NIVC All-Tournament Team honors. For the final three matches of the season, Malcom helped Hannah Bailey, previously a right side/opposite, into the lineup at middle blocker to help the Cyclones close out the season and claim the NIVC title.
Malcom was a member of Rob Patrick’s Tennessee Volunteers coaching staff last season, helping lead UT to a 21-12 record. The Volunteer middles were a strength of the team, with freshman Erica Treiber posting 2.15 kills per set at a team-best a .354 hitting percentage and 1.14 blocks per set en route to earning SEC All-Freshman Team honors. Raina Hembry was also strong in the middle, recording 2.16 kills per set and 0.93 blocks per frame. At Virginia Tech, Malcom worked with a trio of middle blockers who collected AVCA All-America honorable mention in Cara Baarendse, Kathryn Caine and Victoria Hamsher.
A native of Schaller, Iowa, Malcom started her collegiate career at Syracuse for two seasons, before transferring to Iowa State. In her two years, Malcom helped guide ISU volleyball to then-unprecedented heights, helping lead Iowa State to its first Sweet 16 in 2007 and first Elite Eight in 2008. She was a key cog in that revolution, earning All-Big 12 Honorable Mention and AVCA All-Central Region in 2008.
