LAWRENCE, Kan. - Jessica Smith's goal with under 12 minutes to play proved to be the difference as Kansas topped Iowa State 2-1 in Big 12 soccer action. The win gives the Jayhawks an 11-3-2 overall record and a 4-2-1 mark in conference action. Kansas notched its third straight victory over the Cyclones, who fell to 5-9-1 overall and 2-6 in the Big 12.
Kansas got on the board in the 12th minute when sophomore midfielder Lauren Williams scored off assists from Rachel Gilfillan and Brooke Jones. The Jayhawks maintained a one-goal edge until the 57-minute mark, when Cyclone freshman Amy Flores netted her second goal of the season. The Jayhawks regained the lead for good 11 minutes later when Smith scored her sixth goal in the last five games.
Kansas outshot Iowa State 16-8 in the contest, including a 9-1 edge in the first half. Iowa State junior goalkeeper Beth Chapman recorded seven saves.
Flores' goal was the team's 15th of the season, which equals ISU's output from 2001. The Cyclones' 192 shots in 2002 has surpassed 2001's total of 175. Flores became the sixth Iowa State player to score two or more goals this season, marking the first time since 1999 that ISU has had as many as six different players score at least two goals in a season.
Iowa State senior defender Tiffany Belz tied Ali Sullivan for fourth on the all-time ISU games started chart with her 72nd consecutive start.
Iowa State concludes its 2002 regular season road schedule with a 1-6 mark. The Cyclones return home to face Baylor, Friday, Oct. 25 at 4 p.m.
