AMES, Iowa -- It is with the deepest sympathy that the Iowa State Athletic Department announces the death of former track and field standout Gogo Peters. The two-time All-American in the long jump and the triple jump was killed while changing a tire on Interstate 5 in Portland, Ore. on March 15 at 6:45 p.m. Peters is survived by his wife Shawn, a two-year-old son, Elijah.
The former Cyclone was a six-time Big Eight conference champion in the long jump and triple jump. Peters also represented the country of Nigeria in various international competitions in the long jump and the triple jump.
"Gogo was a great person who touched many peoples' lives," said ISU men's head coach Steve Lynn. "He was a great athlete for us, but an even better father and husband. It is truly a tragic loss."
Donations to a trust fund can be made to Shawn Peters and sent to the ISU Track office in care of Steve Lynn at the Jacobson Athletic Building, Ames, Iowa, 50011.
