AMES, Iowa -- Four-time Big 12 high jump champion, Gina Rickert, was named to the 2003 CoSIDA Verizon Academic All-American Women's Cross Country/Track and Field First Team in the university division. Rickert was selected as a nominee for the national list after qualifying for the 2003 Verizon District VII Academic First Team.
To receive a nomination, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials and at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average. He or she must be a sophomore or above in athletic and academic standings, have completed one full academic year at the university and participated in 50 percent of the team's contests.
Rickert, a five-time All-American, excelled in the classroom as well as on the field. She graduated with a top GPA in the MBA program, graduated in the top two percent of the College of Business as an undergraduate, was a four-time first-team academic all-Big 12 honoree, was the 2002 ISU MBA Student of the Year, received the All-Around Academic Achievement Award in 2001 and 2002, was named to the Dean's List every semester as an undergraduate and is a member of numerous societies, including the Golden Key National Honor Society, the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society and the Alpha Kappa Psi Honor Society.
The Cyclone senior recently ended her collegiate athletic career in her final high jump competition at the NCAA Championships in Sacramento, Calif., where she leaped 5-8 3/4 to place 12th, despite a nagging injury to her foot.
Rickert notched a high jump of 6-3 1/2 at the 2003 indoor Iowa State Classic to automatically qualify for the 2004 USA Olympic Trials. With that leap, she also achieved a career-high and set an ISU all-time record.
