AMES, Iowa - Junior Lydia Smirniotis swam a career-high time of 10:31.42 in the 1000 freestyle while senior Gail Olson tallied a NCAA Zone qualifying score of 297.45 on the 3-meter springboard, but Iowa State eventually fell to Minnesota 98-194 Friday night in Beyer Pool.
"I was very happy with the effort of the team at the beginning of the meet," said head coach Duane Sorenson. "All in all, we competed well but we have lots of room for improvement. Hats off to Minnesota for a tremendous performance."
Along with Smirniotis and Olson, freshman Krista Fehl recorded a lifetime best in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.67) by almost two seconds. Junior Maggie Peterson also clocked an in-season best time of 58.87 in the 100 backstroke. Junior Kim Rogers finished second in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:08.02. The Cedar Falls native also took second place in the 200 backstroke (2:08.97).
Sophomore Lauren Breunig swam to a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle (53.28) and finished third in the 200 freestyle with a clocking of 1:54.45.
Senior Brita Benson recorded a time of 1:00.15 in the 100 butterfly to place second. Benson also took fourth place in the 50 freestyle with a clocking of 24.60.
In diving, senior Katie Herman took second place on the 1-meter springboard with a total of 259.95. Olson finished fourth with a point total of 231.07. On the 3-meter board, Herman finished fifth with 232.72 points while Olson, with her score of 297.45, landed in second.
Iowa State will move on to host Illinois on Friday, Nov. 5, at 6 p.m. in Beyer Pool.
