AMES, Iowa - Sophomore Lauren Breunig swam a time of 2:09.39 in the 200 individual medley to place seventh while teammate Lydia Smirniotis recorded a season-best time of 5:06.89 in the 500 freestyle to finish 18th after the first day of competition at the Minnesota Invitational in Minneapolis. The Cyclones are in fifth place after tallying 92 points.
After recording a season-best preliminary time of 24.50, senior Brita Benson placed 23rd in the 50 freestyle with a final time of 24.77. The Winona, Minn., native also anchored the 10th-place 200 freestyle relay (1:38.73) with fellow Cyclones Breunig, Jenny Lindberg and Cassandra Nelson. Benson and Breunig teamed up again as members of the seventh-place 400 medley relay (3:57.43) along with Maggie Peterson and Krista Fehl.
Junior Kim Rogers finished 14th in the 200 individual medley with a clocking of 2:11.54.
In diving, both Cyclone competitors placed in the top ten on the 1-meter springboard. Senior Gail Olson advanced to the finals and finished seventh with a score of 254.05 while junior Hillary Nichols landed in ninth place with a preliminary score of 236.75 after narrowly missing the finals.
Day two of the three-day event begins with preliminaries at 11 a.m. followed by the event finals at 6 p.m.
