AMES, Iowa -
The Iowa State swimming and diving team used this weekend at the Minnesota Invitational to prepare for the Big 12 Championships in February. In the process, the Cyclones managed to collect numerous in-season personal best times and compete head-to-head with talented teams from across the Midwest.
Iowa State remained in fifth place all weekend in the 11-team field and ended Sunday with 402 points. Last season at the Minnesota Invitational, the Cyclones finished eighth with 266 team points.
Host school Minnesota took top honors with 913 points, followed by Wisconsin (880) and future ISU opponents Nebraska (714) and Iowa (610).
"I thought our women swam exceptionally well throughout the meet," head coach Duane Sorenson said. "We had many strong performances and in-season personal best times, such as Lauren Breunig in the 100 and 200 freestyle with times of 52.81 and 1:53.94, Kim Rogers in the 200 backstroke (2:07.39) and 400 individual medley (4:32.72) and Krista Fehl in the 100 and 200 breaststroke with times of 1:07.41 and 2:28.48. Our divers also dove exceptionally well throughout the weekend. We're very happy with the team's performance." Sophomore Breunig added to her fourth-place 100 freestyle and ninth-place 200 freestyle performances with a ninth-place effort in the 400 freestyle relay (3:37.07) with teammates Brita Benson, Cassandra Nelson and Jenny Lindberg.
In the 200 backstroke, three Cyclones finished in the top eight. Rogers touched the wall in third with her in-season personal best time of 2:07.39, followed by junior Maggie Peterson in fifth with a time of 2:09.54 and junior Jamie Wieben in sixth (2:09.68).
Rogers also finished sixth in the 200 butterfly with a clocking of 2:10.43.
Along with Breunig's fourth-place finish in the 100 freestyle (52.81), Cyclone teammate Benson rounded out the top eight with a time of 53.92.
The Cyclone divers continued to impress as junior Hillary Nichols claimed fifth-place on the platform with 323.00 points. Seniors Gail Olson and Katie Herman finished 11th (272.00) and 13th (268.25), respectively.
