Ames, Iowa - Sophomore Lauren Breunig touched the wall in a time of 2:08.25 to capture first place in the 200 individual medley on Friday against Illinois. However, an inconsistent performance by the Cyclones led to an Illini victory of 150-91 in Beyer Pool.
"It's like we had two different Iowa State teams out there tonight," said head coach Duane Sorenson. "Lauren Breunig had an awesome 200 individual medley and a weak 500 freestyle. That's the way the meet went for us tonight. We had great swims and weak swims. We need to be more consistent throughout the meet."
Junior Lydia Smirniotis finished first in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:34.07 but managed only a fifth-place finish in the 500 freestyle (5:20.26) later in the meet. Junior Kim Rogers took first in the 200 butterfly with a clocking of 2:09.22 and swam to a fourth-place finish in the 200 individual medley (2:11.41).
The Cyclone 400 medley relay team of Maggie Peterson, Krista Fehl, Rogers and Breunig claimed second place with a time of 3:58.91. Also finishing second was the 200 freestyle relay team of Brita Benson, Jenny Lindberg, Cassandra Nelson and Kelly Hanus with a clocking of 1:39.17.
In the diving well, seniors Gail Olson and Katie Herman secured the top two places in both events. On the 1-meter springboard Herman took top honors with a score of 255.44 while Olson followed with 254.10. Olson landed in first on the 3-meter springboard, tallying 251.62 points while Herman finished second with 243.75 points.
The Cyclones will have a week off before traveling to Minneapolis for the Minnesota Invitational on Nov. 19-21.
