AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State swimming and diving team won the first 11 events Friday night before exhibitioning the final two in a 135-63 victory over Northern Iowa. The Cyclones received solid performances from Lauren Breunig, Kim Rogers and Maggie Peterson.
"I thought the team, both the swimmers and the divers, competed really well tonight," head diving coach Jeff Warrick said. "Some of the swimmers got the chance to swim in off events and I thought they did well."
Breunig placed first in the 400 individual medley (4:30.72) and the 200 backstroke (2:13.64). The sophomore also recorded an exhibition time of 2:24.99 in the 200 breaststroke. Junior Kim Rogers took first place in both the 1000 freestyle (10:44.16) and the 500 freestyle (5:16.72).
Junior Maggie Peterson placed first in both the 200 freestyle (1:57.61) and 100 freestyle (53.98). The Estherville, Iowa, native was also the lead-off leg for the 200 freestyle relay that recorded an exhibition time of 1:41.71.
Junior Lydia Smirniotis touched the wall first in the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:13.95 and placed second in the 400 individual medley (4:42.25).
On the 3-meter springboard, junior Hillary Nichols and senior Gail Olson recorded exhibition scores of 248.47 and 270.30, respectively. On the platform, Olson and Nichols recorded exhibition scores of 215.93 and 244.65, respectively.
The Cyclone swimmers travel to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for winter training while the divers travel to San Antonio, Texas. Iowa State's next home meet is scheduled for Fri. Jan. 14, against St. Olaf.
