AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State swimming and diving team battled to a fifth-place finish at the 2004 Big 12 Championships in Austin, Texas, this past weekend. Six school records fell and nine swimmers recorded NCAA consideration times. Two Cyclone relays also swam provisional times.
"I thought we performed really well," said head coach Duane Sorenson. "Every swimmer recorded at least one lifetime best and all-season best time."
Seniors Sam Dyshaw, Petra Plaminkova and Lara Skoog were responsible for setting four of the six school records. Dyshaw broke her own school record in the 50 freestyle with a provisional time of 22.98. Plaminkova set a new mark in the 200 breaststroke, clocking in at 2:16.33. Skoog collected two school records with a consideration time of 16:50.93 in the 1650 freestyle. In the process, Skoog broke the 1000 freestyle school record with a split-time of 10:07.64.
"Lara was great, as she got two school records that were her personal bests," Sorenson said. "She hadn't gone that fast in over six years. Lauren Breunig, being a freshman, competed extremely well and had all lifetime or personal bests."
Breunig recorded a NCAA consideration time in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:03.08. Breunig, along with teammates Kim Schmugge, Dyshaw and Brita Benson, was also a member of the 200 freestyle relay that recorded a provisional time of 1:33.02.
The 200 medley relay team of Schmugge, Plaminkova, Benson and Dyshaw also recorded a consideration time of 1:42.78.
A preliminary list of NCAA qualifiers will be released on Thursday with the final list being released on Friday. "Right now, Sam has the best shot to qualify," said Sorenson. "We'll just have to wait and see."
The Cyclones also found success in the diving well. The team scored a school-best 83 points, surpassing the previous best of 56 points scored at the 2003 Big 12 Championships.
"I'm thrilled with their performance," said head diving coach Jeff Warrick. "This is the best we've done as a diving team since I've been here. We've never had a finalist in each event before this year and we've never had two finalists in the same event before this year. It was a total team effort."
Hillary Nichols broker her own school record on the platform with a tally of 363.30 points to place sixth overall.
Senior Linda Wagner finished third on the 1-meter springboard, the highest-ever finish by a Cyclone diver since the inception of the Big 12 Conference.
"Linda did a great job," said Warrick. "And for Hillary to go to the finals in each event, I couldn't have asked for anything more. She's only a sophomore so we have something to build on for future years."
Both Wagner and Nichols qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships that will be held March 12-14, in Houston, Texas.
"It's going to be tough for them to make it to the NCAA Championships," said Warrick. "I've never felt more optimistic about their chances, though. I'm not going to count them out on any event, but Linda's best chance to qualify will be on the 1-meter springboard. We're focusing Hillary on the platform."
The Iowa State swimming and diving team has also put in an outstanding performance in the classroom. Eighteen members were named to the academic all-Big 12 team last week. That was the most by any team in the Big 12.
Sam Dyshaw was one of six student-athletes in the conference with a 4.0 grade point average. This is the third consecutive year the biology major has been named to the first-team with a perfect GPA.
The Cyclones had sixteen honorees on the first-team and two honorees on the second-team. To be named to the first team, a swimmer or diver must maintain a 3.2 GPA. To be named to the second team, a swimmer or diver must maintain a 3.0-3.19 GPA.
The Cyclones' season will come to an end with the 2004 NCAA Championships March 18-20 in College Station, Texas.
