AMES, Iowa - The Cyclone swimming and diving team won 13 of 16 events Saturday in a 184-114 victory over Nebraska-Omaha in Beyer Pool to complete its weekend sweep. ISU defeated St. Olaf 175-115 Friday night in Ames.
"Our women really competed well," head coach Duane Sorenson said. "Krista Fehl had a lifetime best in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.67) and Lydia Smirniotis had a lifetime best in the 1000 freestyle (10:27.21). Maggie Peterson did a nice job getting the meet started for us with her backstroke leg in the 200 medley relay."
Along with her first-place finish in the 1000 freestyle, Smirniotis took first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:12.44. Senior Brita Benson placed first in both the 50 freestyle (24.69) and the 100 butterfly (1:00.15). The Winona, Minn., native, along with teammate Maggie Peterson, also competed on both victorious relay teams, the 200 medley relay (1:49.07) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:37.28).
Peterson also finished first in the 100 backstroke (59.25) and second in the 200 backstroke (2:08.36).
Junior Kim Rogers took first place in all three of her individual events, the 200 butterfly (2:09.13), 200 backstroke (2:07.16) and the 200 individual medley (2:11.58).
In diving, Katie Herman placed third (233.54) and Gail Olson placed fourth (200.10) on the 1-meter springboard. On the 3-meter springboard, Herman took top honors with a score of 241.73.
The Cyclones travel to Columbia to face Missouri in the Big 12 opener on Jan. 22, at 1 p.m.
