AMES, Iowa - After winning its last three meets, the Iowa State swimming and diving team started out the Big 12 season with a 188-107 loss to Missouri in Columbia on Saturday despite a solid effort from several Cyclones.
"I was very pleased with Lydia Smirniotis' effort today as she really went after her 500 freestyle but had a tough defeat," head coach Duane Sorenson said. "Krista Fehl had an outstanding 100 breaststroke and swam a lifetime best in that event. For the rest of the meet we were pretty flat. We need to work on our mental toughness away from home."
After placing second in the 500 freestyle (5:12.46), junior Lydia Smirniotis notched a win in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:28.26. Sophomore Lauren Breunig placed second in the 200 freestyle (1:55.42) and third in the 100 freestyle (54.36). The Mazomanie, Wis., native placed first in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:10.52.
Senior Brita Benson finished second in the 50 freestyle (24.64) and fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:00.63).
In diving, junior Hillary Nichols landed in second place on the 1-meter springboard with a score of 256.65. Seniors Gail Olson (254.10) and Katie Herman (229.73) followed in third and sixth place, respectively. On the 3-meter springboard, Olson placed second (239.85), Herman finished third (239.03) and Nichols tallied 229.20 points to place fifth.
The Cyclones move on to host Nebraska on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 1 p.m. in Beyer Pool.
