AMES, Iowa - Junior Maggie Peterson took first place in the 100 backstroke with a lifetime best clocking of 58.05 and finished second in the 200 backstroke (2:06.31) but the Cyclones were eventually defeated by Nebraska 189-110 in Beyer Pool on Saturday.
"I thought Maggie had an outstanding meet for us," head coach Duane Sorenson said. "I was very happy with many of our swims but I was disappointed we lost. We're headed in the right direction though. I also thought our 400 freestyle relay was excellent today."
Five Cyclone seniors were honored before the meet. Brita Benson, Kelly Hanus, Katie Herman, Jenny Lindberg and Gail Olson all competed in their final home meet for Iowa State. Junior Kim Rogers swam just off her lifetime best in the 200 backstroke (2:06.20) to finish first. Rogers was the runner-up in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:33.55.
Freshman Krista Fehl paced the field in the 100 breaststroke with a mark of 1:06.51 and placed second in the 200 breaststroke (2:29.27).
The 400 freestyle relay of Lauren Breunig, Benson, Lindberg and Peterson finished first with a time of 3:33.55.
In diving, junior Hillary Nichols took top honors with a mark of 260.69 on the 1-meter springboard. Gail Olson finished second (250.20) and Katie Herman placed fourth (237.07). On the 3-meter springboard, Herman finished third (244.72), Olson landed in fourth (244.35) and Nichols placed fifth (238.35).
Iowa State will close out the regular season at Kansas on Saturday, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m. The Big 12 swimming and diving championships take place Feb. 23-26 in College Station, Texas.
