AMES, Iowa - Junior Lydia Smirniotis and sophomore Lauren Breunig swam NCAA consideration and season-best times in the 500 freestyle (4:53.95) and the 200 individual medley (2:03.34), respectively, on Thursday at the Big 12 Championships in College Station, Texas. Smirniotis' time in the 500 free was just off the current school record of 4:53.59 set by Shelli Olson in the 1990-91 season. Iowa State remains in sixth place after two days of competition with 111 points.
In the 50 freestyle, junior Maggie Peterson took 13th place with a time of 24.02. Seniors Brita Benson and Jenny Lindberg placed 21st (24.18) and 23rd (24.43), respectively. The Cyclone 400 medley relay team of Peterson, Krista Fehl, Kim Rogers and Breunig swam a time of 3:46.93 to place third.
In diving, junior Hillary Nichols took third place on the 3-meter springboard with a mark of 459.45. Senior Gail Olson landed in seventh place (430.20) and senior Katie Herman placed 12th with a semi-final score of 382.10.
Friday's action will begin with the 400 individual medley. Other events include the 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and women's 1-meter diving. Prelims begin at 10 a.m. with event finals at 6 p.m.
