AMES, Iowa ? After a much deserved week off, the Iowa State swimming and diving team will return to action this Friday when it travels to Macomb, Ill., for a double-dual meet with Western Illinois and Illinois State.
Iowa State enters the meet with a dual record of 2-0 after two dominant performances against South Dakota State and Nebraska-Omaha on back to back days a little more than a week ago.
The Cyclones will look to get solid performances from divers Tien Tran and Haley Haynes. Both divers qualified for the Zone Diving Championships in the teams opening dual against South Dakota State University. Tran, a freshman, has won both the 1-meter and 3-meter events in her first two dual meets as a Cyclone.
Leading the way for the swimmers have been senior Lauren Breunig and sophomore Marni Benson.
Breunig, a native of Mazomanie, Wis., took home four first place finishes in the teams' dual with Nebraska-Omaha, a day after capturing the crown in the 200 free (1:54.49) against SDSU.
Benson led the way for the Cyclones against SDSU, placing first in the 100 (1:06.68) and 200 breast (2:25.48). She also was a member of the winning 200 Medley Relay (1:49.87).
Under the command of second year head coach Nathan Mundt, Western Illinois has started the season with a 1-1 dual record, a year after finishing third in the Mid-Continent Conference Championships. The Leathernecks dropped their opener to St. Louis but bounced back with a victory over Lewis.
Illinois State, led by 21 year veteran head coach Steve Paska, is also 1-1 in duals this season after winning its opening dual against Northern Iowa and falling to Illinois in its second dual.
Competition will be held in Brophy Hall Pool, home of Western Illinois, this Friday, November 3rd, and is set to begin at 5:00 p.m.
