AMES, Iowa- Iowa State sophomore Marni Benson led the Cyclone swim attack once again recording three first-place finishes in the 200 (2:25.12) and 100 (1:05.78) breaststroke and also in the 200 medley relay (10:54.51). Benson's performance was one of many strong showings that helped defeat UNI, 195-94.
“Marni Benson did an outstanding job. We have been tweaking her techniques and she really picked up on it. We are very happy with the way she performed today,” said head coach Duane Sorenson.
The Cyclones jumped out to an early 88-43 lead on the Panthers, grabbing first-place finishes in the first seven events of competition. Sophomore Lindsay Wegner assisted the 200 medley relay to a first-place finish to open the meet and then repeated her performance three events later, finishing first in the 100 backstroke (59.22). Wegner also recorded a win in the 200 backstroke (2:10.97).
Also stepping up big for the Cyclones were seniors Chelsey Walden, Lauren Breunig and Cassandra Nelson, who all scored first place points in the meet. Walden recorded wins in the 200 (1:57.99) and 500 (5:11.37) freestyle. Breunig's first-place finishes came in the 1000 free style with a time of 10:54.51 and the 200 freestyle relay (1:39.83). Freestyle sprinter Nelson touched the wall first in the women's 50 freestyle (24.68) and was also a part of the 200 medley relay with a split of 24.81.
“Our three seniors are always stepping up,” said Sorenson. “Each of them had a win today; they are always competing and all are doing an outstanding job leading us at every meet.”
The Cyclones finished first in 15 out of 16 events against the Panthers. They will return to action Dec. 8 against their intrastate rival, the Iowa Hawkeyes.
