CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The Iowa State men's and women's track teams had strong performances across the boards at the UNI Classic as they took home six first-place finishes.
"A lot of positive things happened today and overall everyone did a good job," said women's head coach Dick Lee. "For a low key meet we had some high level performances."
Junior Rebecca Williams won the 60-meter hurdles with an effort of 8.61 after placing third in the event at the ISU Open.
Cyclone jumper Jummy Alowonle performed well in the women's long jump and triple jump. A leap of 19-2 3/4 was good enough to put her in first place of the long jump competition and she had a jump of 37-9 1/4 to earn second place in the triple jump.
Erica Lynn took second in the high jump and set a personal record in the shot in preparation for multi-event competition at the ISU Classic. Lynn's high jump mark was 5-6 and she tossed the shot 35-8.
"Erica had a really good day in preparation for the pentathlon," said Lee. "She jumped really well in high jump and also competed strongly in shot put for where she needs to be next weekend."
ISU runner Katie Paulson's effort of 1:38.78 in the 600 yard run earned her a first-place finish. Distance runner Jenny Mockler placed second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:17.03.
The men's throwers reversed roles in the weight throw this weekend as Kendall Fogle took first and Chase Madison earned second. Last time out was the ISU Open where Fogle earned second with a mark of 60-3 3/4 and Madison took first with a toss of 60-6 1/2.
At the UNI Classic, Fogle tossed the weight over sixty feet for the second meet in a row. His mark of 60-0 1/2 earned him a first-place finish. Madison placed second with a toss of 58-06 3/4.
After surpassing his indoor personal best in the triple jump at the ISU Open, Tony Douglas did it again with a leap of 49-11. That jump was good enough to earn first place at the UNI Classic.
Freshman Eric Parker set a personal-best in the 60-meter hurdles and tied for first place with a time of 8.14. He came back to win the event after placing second in the 60-meter hurdle prelims.
Multi-event athlete, Neil Hines, used this meet to prepare for the heptathlon competition at next weekend's ISU Classic. Hines set a new personal record in the hurdles with a time of 8.68 (his old time was 8.83). He also competed in the shot put tossing 43-05 3/4.
"We only had a few people compete here and everybody did a good job today," said men's head coach Steve Lynn.
Up next for the men's and women's track teams will be the ISU Classic. The Cyclones will be hosting the ISU Classic in Ames on February 9-11.
