AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State women's golf team will wrap up its season at the 2006 Big 12 Championship, April 17-19 at the Country Club of Lincoln in Lincoln, Neb. The young Cyclone squad has shown signs of improvement in their last couple of tournaments. A recent eighth-place finish at the tough Northwestern Invitational field has ISU head coach Christie Martens optimistic about the Cyclones' chances next week.
"We obviously want to win, but we are trying to focus on playing our very best every round," Martens said. "If we do that, the results will speak for themselves. We have been improving in all aspects of our game and I am really proud of our players. We beat Colorado and Texas Tech in our last tournament, which gives us momentum heading into the Big 12 Championship."
The Country Club of Lincoln is an old course- built in 1923- with a 5,898-yard layout for the competitors. Despite the short layout, the narrow fairways and abundance of water hazards and greenside bunkers will certainly make it a challenging venue.
"The course is a little shorter than your average one, but the tight fairways will make it extremely important to be accurate off the tee." Martens added.
Christi Athas is having an outstanding junior campaign for the Cyclones and has emerged as the team leader, pacing the unit with a 77.3 stroke average. The Eldora, Iowa native has been impressive in her last two tournaments, finishing in the top-five in both the Mountain View Invitational and Northwestern Invitational. She tied the school record for lowest 18-hole score with a first-round 69 at the Mountain View Invitational and then broke the Cyclone 54-hole tournament record with a 213 total the next week at the Northwestern Invitational.
"Christi has a great chance to win with the way she is playing," Martens said. "She just broke the school record and is a combined 4-under in her last 108 holes of competition." Kendra Hanson is another reason for ISU's late season surge. The sophomore from Forest City, Iowa is second on the squad in stroke average (78.81) and has been a top-35 finisher in her last two tournaments. She finished her last two meets with low rounds, carding scores of 71 and 70 in the final rounds of the Mountain View Invitational and Northwestern Invitational, respectively.
"Kendra is really improving and working hard," Martens said. "It has been exciting to see her become a leader on this team."
Jessica Shin (So., Mankato, Minn.), Karly Pinder (So., Exeter, Ontario) and Melissa DeRoos (Sr. Council Bluffs, Iowa) fill out ISU's top-five competing at the Big 12 Championship.
