AUSTIN, Texas--Iowa State's Neil Hines achieved three personal records and a provisional qualifying mark while capturing a sixth-place finish at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays hosted by the University of Texas. The junior's personal records came in the 100-meter dash (11.22), the 110-meter hurdles (15.51) and he beat his old discus record of 129-2 with a toss of 137-4.
Hines was in 11th place with two events left but finished second in the javelin and third in the 1500 meters. Those performances boosted him to a point-total of 7,052 which was good for a sixth-place finish. Hines has been battling a hip injury and that leaves room for improved performances throughout the rest of the season.
"We feel like he can score 300 more points than he did in this meet," men's head coach Steve Lynn said. "This is the first time he's had a chance to compete in a decathlon before the Drake Relays. That's one of the reasons we came to this meet because now he can train and get ready for Drake as he continues to move up."
The decathlon competition boasted the top multi-event athletes in the nation and they didn't disappoint. Trey Hardee of Texas set a new NCAA decathlon record of 8,465.
Multi-event athlete Erica Lynn recorded a personal-record point total of 5,055 in the heptathlon beating her old record of 5,041. She set a new personal-javelin record at 108-2 beating her old record of 96-7 and also set new personal-records in the 200 (25.79) and in the high jump (5-7 3/4). Lynn finished 12th among 22 competitors and provisionally qualified in the heptathlon. She will focus on training and get ready for the Drake Relays. Sophomore Chase Madison tossed 179-2, his second-best discus mark of the season. The Newton native placed eighth overall and was the third finisher among Big 12 throwers in the event. Also in the field events, senior Tony Douglas leapt 21-11 3/4 to finish 13th in the long jump.
