AUSTIN, Texas- After the first day of competition, long jumper Tony Douglas was able to punch his ticket into the NCAA Track and Field National Championship in Sacramento, Calif.
The senior leaped his way into the national meet with a third-place finish in the long jump. The Illinois native jumped 25-8 3/4 breaking his previous personal best by nearly four inches. Douglas will be making his second appearance at the national meet. In the 2005 NCAA Track and Field Championships, Douglas triple jumped 50-9 1/2 and finished 18th.
"Tony did a great job today," said jumps coach Ron McEachran. "The competition was phenomenal and he handled it well."
Two cyclones qualified to run in Saturday's finals. Senior David Rotich was the first to qualify when he clocked a time of 3:52.72 in the 1500-meter run. Rotich's effort gave him just enough to carry him into tomorrow's final run at 6 p.m.
"David put himself in the right position," said men's head coach Steve Lynn. "David made himself comfortable the whole race and the last 300-meters he ran hard and made finals."
Qualifying for the women was 400 hurdler Sara Boisen. The junior from West Des Moines, Valley, clocked a time of 1:00.83. Boisen came in to today's meet seeded fifth in the region with a time of 59.20 and will run in tomorrow's final to try and reserve her seat in the national meet.
"Sara ran a great race. She led the whole way and just got nipped in the end," said sprints and hurdles coach Scott Roberts. "Tomorrow should be exciting, it's a wide open race and she has a good chance to clinch a spot."
Three-time All-American, Ada Anderson, clocked a time of 2:10.77 but did not qualify for finals.
"Ada has had a tremendous career. She's a hard worker and a great leader. It's hard to find a three-time All-American," said Roberts. "We are definitely going to miss her."
Elijah Braimah fell just short of qualifying for tomorrows final in the 400-meter dash. The junior ran a time 47.13 and missed finals by less than two-tenths of a second.
Chase Madison threw 179-2 in the discus but did not qualify. The sophomore finished 10th in the region which may still get him into nationals based off the NCAA at large rule.
Senior Nicole Teitsworth placed 15th in the javelin throw. Teitsworth threw her career best 143-11.
Already a national qualifier in the heptathlon, Erica Lynn competed today in the high jump with a loaded field of 24. The senior cleared a high opening height of 5-7 3/4.
Saturday's field events will kick-off at 1 p.m. Tony Douglas hopes to qualify for nationals for the second time, when he competes in the triple jump at 2 p.m. Running events are scheduled to begin at 5:30.
