AUSTIN, Texas-David Rotich was first to clinch his spot for the national meet when he clocked 3:43.87 in Saturday's 1500-meter run. The senior's effort gave him a third-place finish overall and was good enough to top Colorado's star 1500-meter runner, Stephen Pifer, who currently holds the nation's fastest time in the 1500.
"David did what he needed to do to advance to nationals," said men's head coach Steve Lynn. "He stayed off the pace early on in the race and then caught up. His last 300-meters was fantastic, his split was near 40 seconds."
Sara Boisen qualified for her first ever NCAA national meet. The junior's time of 59.75 in the 400 hurdles gave her a third-place finish in the event.
"The race felt good, I had a goal in mind when I came here and that was to make nationals and I did it." said Boisen.
The West Des Moines, Valley native came into today's final with a time of 1:00.83 giving her the eighth spot in the final run.
"Sara ran a great race. She took control right away starting out in second-place," said sprints and hurdles coach Scott Roberts. "She really ran a gutsy race."
Boisen's father, Lee Boisen, a former Iowa State Alum, promised to get a Cy tattoo if his daughter were to make nationals.
"He made me that promise and I am going to hold him to it." said Boisen.
Senior Tony Douglas, who qualified for the national meet Friday in the long jump, competed in today's triple jump event with many of the nation's best jumpers. Douglas's best effort came on his third jump of the competition where he leaped 50-5 ¼, his season's best, landing him a seventh-place finish in the event. Chase Madison was scheduled to compete in today's shot put event. Madison, who was troubled by injury early on in the season, did not compete due to pain in his throwing hand. The sophomore from Newton, Iowa, will prepare for the national meet where he will compete in the discus throw.
Iowa State track and field will take the next ten days to prepare for the NCAA Track and Field National Championships where it will send six athletes to compete. Making the trip to nationals for the women's team is senior Erica Lynn who will make her appearance in the heptathlon and Sara Boisen who will compete in the 400 hurdles. The men's team will send the decathlete Neil Hines, long jumper Tony Douglas, discus thrower Chase Madison, and the 1500-meter runner David Rotich. The national meet will be held in Sacramento, Calif. from June 7-10.
