The third-ranked Cyclone wrestling team will travel to Lincoln, Neb., to take on the Huskers at NU Coliseum at 7 p.m. Saturday.
SERIES NOTES
The Cyclones will be looking to snap a two-dual losing skid versus Nebraska. The Huskers have won the past two duals by a single point a piece, 22-21 in 2006 and 16-15 in 2005. ISU last defeated Nebraska during the 2004 season, 22-9 in Ames. Iowa State has not been victorious in the Nebraska Coliseum since 2001 when the Cyclones took a 22-13 win. Iowa State holds the all-times series against Nebraska at 76-14-2.
Of 10 bouts, 157-pounds will be the only rematch from last year's meeting. Trent Paulson and Chris Oliver spent only seconds on the match before Paulson surrendered the match to Oliver via injury default.
Key match-ups could rest at 125- and 141 pounds. ISU's Nick Fanthorpe has become a vital component of the Cyclone lineup, providing big wins. During the National Duals, Fanthorpe opened with a 16-5 major decision over Michigan's Mike Watts. He then downed nationally ranked Dave Tomasette of Hofstra, 13-9. Prior to National Duals, Fanthorpe advanced to the championship bout of the Midlands Championship unseeded. The redshirt freshman has earned national recognition and is now ranked 12th. Fanthorpe's opponent, Paul Donahoe went 2-1 during the National Duals, handing both Tomasette and Watts losses. He is 23-2 on the season and has carried the Huskers by scoring 41 dual points. He leads the team with 10 pins and six major decisions.
At 141 pounds, Iowa State's Mitch Mueller will meet Dominick Moyer. This will be another highly competitive match-up as Mueller is ranked 10th and Moyer eighth by Intermat. Mueller is coming off of a 5-3 overtime upset of two-time All-American Nathan Morgan of Oklahoma State at National Duals. Moyer suffered two losses in three outings during National Duals, Charles Griffin of Hofstra registered a 12-2 major decision over the Husker and Iowa's Alex Tsirtsis scored a 4-3 decision.
SCOUTING NEBRASKA
The Huskers open Big 12 Conference action with a 7-3 record. Prior to the NWCA/Cliff Keen National duals this past weekend, Nebraska only had a single loss to Oregon State (21-15). Going 1-2 during the National Duals, the Huskers bowed out of the tournament after falling 32-6 to Hofstra and 30-5 against Iowa. Nebraska did pick up a 23-13 victory over Michigan during the National Duals.
Nebraska's lineup is dominated by underclassmen as there are six wrestlers who are in their first season of action. These six true/redshirt freshman have provided the Husker lineup with 66 combined victories. Two seniors, Dominick Moyer (141) and Marc Harwood (174) lead the way for the Huskers. Moyer is a two-time NCAA tournament qualifier, while Harwood made his first trip in 2006 at 165 pounds.
Sophomore 125-pounder, Paul Donahoe and Moyer hold the highest rankings for the Huskers. Both wrestlers are ranked eighth at their respective weight class. Donahoe is one of five returning NCAA qualifiers that are slated to wrestle against Iowa State.
