LINCOLN, Neb. ? The Cyclones received strong performances from freshman Jenny Vondenkamp and sophomores Frances Calzada and Lindsey Behrens but were unable to remain in second place on day two of the Husker Invite. The Cyclones dropped to third place with 476.5 points, trailing Colorado State and first-place Nebraska.
Iowa State's best individual performance on the night came from Vondenkamp. The Elk River, Minn., native took home second-place honors in the 500 yard free with a lifetime best 5:00.92, just 0.68 seconds behind the leader. The time was good enough for the 10th fastest in ISU history, making it her second record in as many days as she set the 10th fastest 1,650 free in ISU history in yesterday's competition.
Calzada, of Canovanas, Puerto Rico, earned a fourth-place finish in the 50 yard free as she clocked a 24.67. She was also the anchor leg of the second-place 400 medley relay team comprised of Lindsay Wegner, Jeli Nixt and Abby Glaser which swam a 3:54.51. Calzada teamed up with Behrens, Glaser and Marni Benson in the 200 free relay to finish in fourth with a time of 1:38.18.
Along with her contributions to the 200 free relay team, Behrens also finished third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:09.85.
“We are swimming outstanding in the meet so far,” said head coach Duane Sorenson. “I am very pleased with how we are racing against Colorado State and Nebraska.”
On the boards, junior Kali Fryklund and sophomore Tien Tran finished in fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 1-meter diving event.
