AMES, Iowa ? For the first time since Dec. 1999, Iowa State wrestling has been named the top-ranked team in the country, the National Wrestling Coaches Association and
W.I.N. Magazine announced Tuesday night. The Cyclones had been listed as the second-rated team since preseason, but took over as the No. 1 squad after beating defending NCAA team champion Minnesota 18-13 Sunday in Minneapolis.
With the announcement of the newest rankings, eight ISU grapplers are ranked in the top-20 of their respective weight classes and six Cyclones are listed in the top 10. All-American
Jake Varner holds down the top-spot at 184 pounds, while
Nick Fanthorpe is listed as the third-ranked wrestler at 133 pounds.
Cyler Sanderson and
David Zabriskie have both moved up to fourth at 157 pounds and heavyweight, respectively. Redshirt freshman
Jon Reader is ranked sixth at 165 pounds and
Mitch Mueller is ranked 10th at 149 pounds. Also listed in the top-20 are
Nick Gallick (12) at 141 pounds and senior 197-pounder
David Bertolino (16).
The Cyclones play host to intrastate rival Iowa in the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series Sunday at 2 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum. The meet is sold out. The dual will be televised live on Iowa Public Television and live stats will be available on cyclones.com
