AMES, Iowa - Iowa State clinched the 2007-08 Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Trophy with a 152-148 win over Iowa in swimming and diving Friday night. The Cyclones and Hawkeyes traded blows early and only one point separated the instate rivals with five events remaining before ISU pulled away, capturing victories in the next three events to give the Cyclones the victory.
With the win, the Cyclones snapped a three-meet skid to Iowa and clinched the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk series, as Iowa State now leads 14-3 with just five events remaining.
With Iowa State up 104-103, the Cyclones looked to Jenny Vondenkamp to stretch the lead. The freshman from Elk River, Minn., delivered with the biggest victory of her young career as she touched the wall first in the 500 free with a time of 5:02.85, just .33 seconds ahead of second place.
In the next event, sophomore Abby Glaser picked up nine points for the Cyclones as she won the 100 fly with a time of 56.80, edging out second place by .16 seconds.
Also giving the Cyclones a lift was Lindsay Wegner as she captured two individual first-place finishes for the second consecutive meet. Wegner, a junior from Hutchinson, Minn., won the 100 back with a career best 57.60, which ranks as the sixth fastest time in ISU history. She then won the 200 back with a time of 2:05.21.
In the 100 and 200 breaststroke events, freshman Jeli Nixt and Marni Benson dominated as they captured the top two spots in each event. Nixt posted the seventh fastest time in ISU history and a career best time of 1:05.28 in the 100 breast to place first and Benson won the 200 breast in a time of 2:22.74.
Glaser, Wegner and Benson were also members of the 200 medley relay team which won the first event of the night.
“This was a total team effort today,” said head coach Duane Sorenson. “We needed every single member of this team, from first to fifth place.”
On the boards, junior Kali Fryklund and Tien Tran both had outstanding nights to help propel the Cyclones to a victory.
Fryklund posted career bests in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. A native of Eden Prairie, Minn., she shattered her previous career high in the 3-meter as she recorded a 276.97 to place first. Her 256.94 in the 1-meter was another personal best and was good for second place.
Tran, a sophomore from Greenwood, Ind., posted her all-time best score in the 1-meter event as she took first place with a 260.40. In the 3-meter she placed third with a 263.26.
“I really couldn't be more excited for our team,” diving coach Jeff Warrick said. “It was really exciting and they pushed us down to the wire like we knew they would, but our team kept fighting and did a great job. It is great that we won it [Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series]. The last thing you want to do is prolong the series so it is really great for our program and Iowa State in general.”
Iowa State will return to action on Jan. 18, as they play host to St. Olaf. Over the break the team will also be going on a winter training trip. The swimmers will head to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., while the divers head to Houston, Texas.
