Iowa State Climbs To Fourth At Big 12 Meet

COLLEGE STATION, Texas ? The Iowa State swimming and diving team had a very strong performance on day two of the 2007 Women's Big 12 Championships. Coming into today's competition, Iowa State was in sixth place, just behind Nebraska, but after a very impressive performance, the Cyclones moved into fourth place after day two with 135 team points.

“We are on fire. We are swimming lifetime best after lifetime best which was one of our goals at the beginning of the meet, so I'm very proud of our women,” said Iowa State head coach Duane Sorenson.

Senior Lauren Breunig, a native of Mazomanie, Wis., had Iowa State's top individual performance of the night as she touched the wall fourth in the 200 IM. With a time of 2:00.31, Breunig qualified for the NCAA Championships and earned second-team all-conference honors. She also set the school record for the event and finished just .34 seconds behind the third place finisher.

Breunig was also a member of the fourth place 400 medley relay team. The foursome of Lindsay Wegner, Marni Benson, Abby Glaser and Breunig teamed up to post a time of 3:47.31. The time marks the fifth fastest in ISU history.

Abby Glaser, a freshman from Elburn, Ill., was one of three swimmers to earn points in the 50 free. Glaser posted a time of 23.70 and finished ninth.

Swimming alongside Glaser in the 50 free was senior Cassandra Nelson and freshman Frances Calzada. Nelson recorded a time of 23.77 to finish tenth and Calzada touched the wall in 12^th with a time of 23.83.

Chelsey Walden, a senior from Madison, Wis., also set a school record in the 500 free with a time of 4:52.30, which led to an 18^th place finish.

On the boards for the Cyclones, freshman Tien Tran finished eighth in the three-meter event. Tran, a Greenwood, Ind. native, posted a point total of 267.45.

“Tomorrow will be another tough day, but we are going to go out there and race the best we can and see what happens,” said Sorenson.

Tomorrow's competition begins at 10:00 a.m. with the 200 free relay prelims. Finals for tomorrow's diving events are scheduled to start at 5 p.m., with swimming finals beginning at 6 p.m. Live action will be available on aggieathletics.com, with results being available on cyclones.com.
