Glaser and Breunig Lead ISU on Day Three

COLLEGE STATION, Texas ? Iowa State received solid performances from freshman Abby Glaser, who swam to a lifetime best in the 100 fly, and Lauren Breunig, who captured her second fourth-place individual finish, on day three of the 2007 Women's Big 12 Championships. The Cyclones finished the day in fifth place with 212 team points, holding off sixth place Nebraska, which has 192.5 points.

“We were a little disappointed with our performance this morning,” said Iowa State head coach Duane Sorenson. “But tonight we swam much better and stronger and held off Nebraska through the night.”

Glaser, a native of Elburn, Ill., swam to a sixth place finish in the 100 fly with a career-best time of 55.28. Glaser's time is the fourth fastest time in Iowa State history and made the consideration time to be entered into the NCAA Championships. Also swimming the 100 fly was sophomore Lindsay Wegner who finished 13th with a time of 57.07.

“Abby's performance was unbelievable. The way she went out and raced and competed as a freshman at this level was incredible,” Sorenson added.

Breunig earned second-team all-conference honors as she captured her second fourth-place finish of the championships in the 200 free. The Mazomanie, Wis. native also qualified for the NCAA Championships with a time of 1:48.17. Fellow senior Chelsey Walden also swam in the event and picked up three team points for the Cyclones with a career-best time of 1:52.68 and a 14th-place finish.

Iowa State's 200 free relay team put together a strong performance as the quad of Breunig, Frances Calzada, Glaser and Cassandra Nelson finished in third. The group touched the wall with a time of 1:34.02, which marks the fifth fastest time in Iowa State history.

In the 100 breast, junior Krista Fehl placed 11th and sophomore Marni Benson finished 13th to earn a combined ten points for the Cyclones. Fehl, a native of Sturgeon Bay, Wis., touched the wall in 1:04.82 while Benson was just .26 seconds behind her and finished in 1:05.08.

“From our dual meet and the Big 12 Relays, we knew it would be a dogfight between Nebraska and ourselves for fifth place,” explained Sorenson. “It could go down to the last relay event tomorrow night.”

The final day of the championships begins tomorrow at 10 a.m. with prelims, followed by finals at 5 p.m. Live action will be shown on aggieathletics.com, with results available on cyclones.com.
