COLLEGE STATION, Texas ? Lauren Breunig and Haley Haynes led the Cyclones as they earned second-team all-conference honors on the last day of the 2007 Women's Big 12 Championships. Breunig and Haynes placed fourth in the 100 free and platform diving event, respectively. As a team, the Cyclones finished in sixth place with 325 team points.
In the 100 free, Iowa State had four athletes earn points for the team. Breunig earned second-team all-conference honors with an Iowa State school record and an NCAA consideration time of 49.79. Freshman Abby Glaser finished 12th with a time of 51.88. Touching the wall in 15th and 16th place respectively were Frances Calzada (52.16) and Cassandra Nelson (52.69).
In the next event of the day, Chelsey Walden had an NCAA consideration time in the 1650 free. Walden, a native of Madison, Wis., finished eighth with a time of 16:41.16 which is the Iowa State school record. Her 1000 split time of 10:03.71 was also a school record.
Marni Benson also earned six points for the Cyclones with her performance in the 200 breast. Benson, a sophomore from Winona, Minn., placed 11th with a time of 2:20.90.
Lindsay Behrens continued the scoring for the Cyclones with a 15th place finish in the 200 fly. The freshman native of Council Bluffs, Iowa, posted a time of 2:08.88.
In the last swimming event of the meet, Iowa State's 400 free relay team finished third. Breunig, Calzada, Glaser and Nelson combined to post a time of 3:24.89 which makes the NCAA consideration time list and is the second fastest time in ISU history.
“I'm very pleased with our performance even though we came up a little short of Nebraska,” head coach Duane Sorenson said. “We were less than one point per event away, set five school records and made several provisional times. We are really happy with our performance.”
Diving for the Cyclones, sophomore Haynes earned second-team all-conference honors for her performance in the platform diving event. Haynes, from The Woodlands, Texas, finished with a point total of 219.90.
“Haley had a truly amazing performance under the circumstances she was under,” said head diving coach Jeff Warrick. “Every dive she did in prelims and finals was her first time doing that dive and for her to get up there and compete like she did was great. It is one of those stories that you usually only read about.”
The swimmers final meet will be the NCAA Championships on March 8-10 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Cyclones will be represented by Breunig in the 100 free, 200 free and 200 IM.
The next competition for the Cyclone divers will be the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in Austin, Texas, on March 2-4. Competing for Iowa State will be sophomore Haley Haynes and freshman Tien Tran.
