Cyclones Conclude Play in Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, P.R. ? The Iowa State women's golf team finished its first spring tournament of the season Sunday at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic hosted by Purdue. The Cyclones were unable to move up in the final team standings, falling to 13th out of 16 teams. ISU came into today's final round at 12th place and finished Friday's first-round action in 11th. Auburn was able to fend off a furious rally by its SEC counterpart Georgia and Oklahoma State for the team title by five strokes. Medalist honors were split between Alina Lee (Georgia), Jenny Suh (Alabama), Mariana Macias (Auburn), Pernilla Lindberg (Oklahoma State) and Valentine Derrey (TCU).

As a team, Iowa State fired a final round of 316, finishing at 72-over par. The Cyclones defeated Wisconsin for the third time this year and finished ahead of Texas Tech and Minnesota.

Freshman Pennapa Pulsawath was ISU's top finisher, ending up in a tie for 38th. Pulsawath was consistent, carding a 77 in her final two rounds to give her a tournament total of 229. Despite high scores across the board from players, Pulsawath still lowered her season scoring average from 77.33 to 77.13.

Senior Christi Athas led the way in the final round, firing a 76, her lowest of the event, to finish at 4-over par. Athas played her 102nd career round and will tie Laura Wells in her next event as she moves up the all-time career-rounds played list. She finished tied with two others for 48th place.

Karly Pinder had a final round of 82 to put her at 58th place with Texas Tech's Gloriana Soto. Pinder had her best showing in the first round, shooting a 77. She finished with a tournament total of 238 and was 22-over par. Jessica Shin finished in a five-way tie for 63rd, finishing with a three-round score of 240. Kendra Hanson shot a final round of 82 to put her at 79th.

Iowa State will head to the A&M "Mo" Morial in College Station, Texas, March 9-11.
