AMES, Iowa ? With a chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships on the line, Haley Haynes and Tien Tran of the Iowa State diving team will travel to the 2007 NCAA Zone D Diving Championships (Districts 5 & 6) this weekend for three days of competition. The diving begins on Friday with the 3-meter and concludes on Sunday with the platform diving event. Competition will be held in the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center at the University of Texas in Austin.
Head diving coach Jeff Warrick feels his divers are fully prepared for the challenge of the Zone D Diving Championships.
“I think they [Haynes and Tran] have been doing very well and have had some good practices,” said Warrick. “We are trying to get the women in ?meet mode' by preparing them mentally for competition. The Big 12 Championships were a good lead-up, but this is going to be pretty stiff competition.”
Haynes, a sophomore from The Woodlands, Texas, is coming off one of the best freshman seasons in Iowa State history which resulted in a trip to the 2006 NCAA Zone Diving Championships, but has battled injury throughout much of this year. She will be competing in the 1-meter diving event and the platform competition, which she placed 11th in last year. Haynes has captured ten top-three finishes on the year, including three victories on the 1-meter board. At the Big 12 Championships, Haynes earned second-team all-conference honors with a fourth place finish in the platform event, posting a season-high score of 219.90. Her season best on the 1-meter is 275.40 at Missouri.
Tran, a freshman native of Greenwood, Ind., has proved to be very consistent for the Cyclones throughout the year. She has nine first-place finishes on the year, including consecutive victories in her first six competitions as a member of the Cyclone squad. Tran also has 19 top-three finishes on the year. At the Big 12 Championships, Tran posted a score of 267.45 in the 3-meter event to place eighth. In Austin, Tran will be the only ISU diver competing in all three events. Her career best in the 1-meter is 256.80, while her career bests in the 3-meter and platform events are 288.37 and 191.76, respectively.
“Our goals are to have our divers be at or near, and hopefully above their personal bests,” added Warrick. “If they can do that we will be happy and that will give them a shot at qualifying for the NCAA Championships.”
Nearly 30 divers will be competing at the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships, with just seven advancing to the 2007 NCAA Championships which will be held on March 8-10 in Minneapolis, Minn. Diving results for this weekend's competition will be available on cyclones.com.
