BRYAN, Texas ? The Iowa State women's golf team duplicated its first round score during Saturday's second-round action at the Texas A&M “Mo” Morial at the Traditions Golf Club. Despite receiving solid all-around play, the Cyclones dropped to a tie for 13th place with Oklahoma in the 16-team field. Top-ranked Arizona State still leads a tight team race by one stroke over a resurgent Southern California team that chopped off 14 strokes from its first-round score. USC's Paola Moreno was the only player to shoot under par in the second round, carding a 2-under par 70, and taking over the lead for medalist honors by two strokes.
Pennapa Pulsawath again led the way for Iowa State, firing a 78 to remain at 12-over par and still in the hunt for her second career top-10 finish. The freshman birdied the first hole on the front nine and had 10 pars to finish at 6-over par. The Bangkok, Thailand, native was tied for ninth at the completion of Friday's action and now stands in 16th.
ISU received a great second round from Jessica Shin as she rebounded from an opening round of 88. Shin recorded four consecutive birdies to finish even on the front nine and ended with a 79. The Mankato, Minn., native jumped considerably in the standings, moving from 82nd to 66th.
Karly Pinder, who had top-10 finishes at the Sunflower Invitational and Edwin Watts Palmetto Intercollegiate in the fall campaign, also improved her second round score after opening with five straight pars. Pinder registered an 81, two strokes better than her first round total. She made adjustments on the front nine holes, finishing 4-over par compared to 10-over par in Friday's round. The Exeter, Ontario, native scored two birdies on the front nine after bogeying eight of nine holes in the first round. Pinder stayed put in the individual standings at 56th.
Senior Christi Athas was tied for 44th at the completion of her 103rd career round. Athas picked up an 85 after scoring a par in her first four out of five holes played. The Eldora, Iowa, native, is now tied for 63rd with a two-round score of 166. Athas will continue to move up the school's all-time career rounds played list with Mary Jo Cunningham (1978-82) in her sights at 105.5.
Kendra Hanson was also four strokes off her first-round pace, finishing with an 87. She finished at 15-over par but ended on a strong note, birdying her final hole on a 183-yard par three.
Sunday's final round will begin at 8:30 a.m. The Cyclones will have a five-day break before hitting the links in Texas again at the Longhorn Invitational March 16-18.
