AMES, Iowa ? The Iowa State women's golf team will face some of the best competition in the nation when it competes at the A&M “Mo” Morial March 9-11 at the Traditions Golf Club in College Station, Texas. For the Cyclones, it will be their second tournament of the spring season after placing 13th at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in February. A talent laden 14-team field features five of the top 25 teams in the country, along with six Big 12 Conference opponents. Stroke average leader Pennapa Pulsawath continued her impressive freshman campaign by earning ISU's best finish for the second time in five attempts in San Juan.
Senior Christi Athas is continuing her ascent up the career rounds played list with 102 and will tie Laura Wells for 10th place with the completion of Friday's round. Athas finished strong at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, registering her best score in the final round with a 76.
Pulsawath opened the Lady Puerto Rico Classic with a team-low 75 in the first round and was consistent the rest of the way, scoring a pair of 77s to finish at 38th place. The Bangkok, Thailand, native has led ISU in scoring average after every event, posting a 77.13 mark through five tournaments.
Arizona State, with the strength of three individuals in the top 10, is the No. 1 ranked team in the nation and is slated to compete along with Oklahoma State and UCLA, both ranked in the top 15. Host school Texas A&M is rated 18th while South Carolina rounds out the top 25 in Golfweek's March 4 rankings.
The Cyclones are familiar with their competition, facing only ASU, Denver, Texas A&M and UCLA for the first time this season. Iowa State finished ahead of Kansas State at the Lady Badger Invitational to open up its fall season, while tying with Tulsa at the Aloha Purdue Invitational in the final tournament of the fall.
ISU finished tied for 13th with Oregon State at last year's A&M “Mo” Morial as the Aggies tied with Arkansas to take home team honors. Despite shooting two rounds in the 80s, Athas pulled a 74 in the final round to tie for 36th.
Live scoring of the tournament will be available at Cyclones.com courtesy of Golfstat.com. Iowa State will be back in action again in Texas, participating at the Betsy Rawls Invitational in Austin March 15-18.
