Pulsawath Propels ISU in Day One

BRYAN, Texas ? The Iowa State women's golf team wrapped up the first day of action at the 14th annual Texas A&M “Mo” Morial Friday at the Traditions Golf Club. The Cyclones stand in 11th place after carding a round of 323 in a deep 16-team field that features five top-25 schools and are leading Big 12 Conference opponents Kansas State and Texas. Top-ranked Arizona State leads UCLA by one stroke while Bruin Hannah Jun is the early leader in the individual race over seventh-ranked defending tournament medalist Ashley Knoll from Texas A&M.
Pennapa Pulsawath continued to hit her stride in a strong freshman campaign. The Bangkok, Thailand, native held her own against Arizona State's sixth-ranked Jennifer Osborn and 10th-ranked Azahara Munoz, firing a 4-over par 76 to end Friday in a tie for ninth. Pulsawath, who registered a top-10 finish in her ISU debut at the Lady Badger Invitational, finished her first nine holes at 1-under par after scoring back-to-back birdies on holes 6 and 7.
Senior Christi Athas moved into a tie for 10th place in Iowa State's career rounds played list with Laura Wells at 103. Athas scored an 81 in her first round, tying three other for 43rd place.
Kendra Hanson and Karly Pinder both shot an 11-over par 83 to tie for 56th place with seven other competitors. Jessica Shin recorded a round of 88 to finish at 16-over par.
