AMES, Iowa ? The Iowa State women's golf team will aim to peak against conference competition when it competes at the Big 12 Championship hosted by Baylor in Waco, Texas, April 16-18. Play begins 9 a.m. Monday morning at the par-70, 6,142-yard Ridgewood Country Club followed by respective rounds at 9 a.m. Tuesday and 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. Jessica Shin was Iowa State's top performer from last year's conference tournament, becoming the first player in ISU history to finish in the top 10. The junior placed ninth and garnered all-conference accolades while tying the school's second-lowest round with a 70 on the second day. She recently was named to the 2007 Academic All-Big 12 Women's Golf first team for the second year in a row as a biology major.
At the 2006 Big 12 Championship in Lincoln, Neb., the Cyclones fired a three-day total of 937, tying the second-best finish by a Cyclone team in the 10-year history since its inception. Karly Pinder, coming off her fourth top-10 finish this season at the Indiana Invitational, registered a 16th-place showing as a sophomore.
Freshman Pennapa Pulsawath heads into the event as the team leader in stroke average, scoring a 77.26 clip through 26 rounds. Pinder closed the gap and finished the regular season at a 77.50 pace, eclipsing her mark from last year by nearly four strokes (79.85). Senior Christi Athas tied for 26th and will match Beth Bader for fourth place in the career rounds played list with her next completed round at 113.
Texas A&M will be looking to defend its 2006 conference title as last year's medalist, ninth-ranked Ashley Knoll returns.
