AMES, Iowa ? As the 2008 season approaches, the Iowa State women's golf team finds itself in the middle of winter workouts. The Cyclones set numerous school and individual records during their 2007 fall campaign. The fall season was highlighted by a trio of top-three finishes in a four-tournament schedule. During the course of the fall season, ISU found itself ranked among Golfweek's top-30 Division I teams, the highest ranking for an Iowa State team in more than a decade.
ISU started out on the right track as it tallied a runner-up finish at the 12-team Lady Badger Invitational Sept. 9-10 in Madison, Wis. Three Cyclones placed in the top-three individually, led by senior Kendra Hanson, who took home medalist honors, carding a 36-hole score of 147. Iowa State's highly-regarded freshman, Laurence Herman, and ISU's returning stroke average leader, Pennapa Pulsawath finished in a tie for second place. The medalist honor for Hanson was the first of her collegiate career.
Following the Badger Invite, the Cyclones headed west to the Rocky Mountains to participate in the competitive 18-team Ron Moore Intercollegiate Sept. 17-18 in Highlands Ranch, Colo. Led by a school-record team score of 291 during the final round, Iowa State stormed to a third-place finish while defeating five other Big 12 Conference teams. Senior Karly Pinder's 54-hole score of 220, which included final round 69, was good enough for her fifth top-10 finish in her Cyclone career. Pinder's final round score of 69, tied the 18-hole school record.
“One exciting part of the fall season was that we had a different player finish low for us every week,” said ISU head coach Christie Martens. “That shows the depth and talent of this team. They really came together as a unit throughout the fall. This team is the hardest working bunch I have coached. They want to improve and want to do what it takes to get there. We have a great bunch of student-athletes who set high goals and work towards improvement--that is what makes it fun.”
ISU finished seventh out of 20 teams at the Edwin Watts Intercollegiate Oct. 29-30 in Kiawah, S.C. The Cyclones closed out the fall season on a high note, placing four golfers in the top 17 finishers, in route to its second runner-up finish of the fall at the Challenge at Wolfdancer Nov. 4-5 in Austin, Texas.
Pinder and Hanson, the team's lone seniors have accepted a leadership role this fall and want to make a run at the NCAA Championships during their final years as Cyclones.
“Our ultimate team goal is to get to the NCAA championships this year,” Pinder said. “We feel that we have more team chemistry this year than in past seasons. If we can take the momentum that we gained during our fall season and winter workouts into the spring season, I think our team can go a long ways.”
One bright spots this fall was the emergence of Herman. A native of Kortrijk, Belgium, posted three top-11 finishes during fall action and is third on the team with a 76.3 stroke average.
Pulsawath picked up where she left off last spring as a true freshman by capturing four top-14 finishes this fall. Pulsawath has carded eight top-20 finishes in just 14 meets as a Cyclone and is ISU's stroke average leader as a sophomore.
Newcomer Katelynn Hogenson, saw her first collegiate action of her rookie year and carded rounds of 77 and 78 at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate in Kiawah, S.C. The three-time prep state qualifier from Muscatine, looks to be key contributor to the team this spring.
Looking ahead to the spring, Iowa State faces another big challenge against Big 12 teams. Eight Big 12 squads are ranked in the top-50 of the latest Golfweek rankings. Texas A&M, the defending Big 12 Tournament champ, and Oklahoma State look to be the early favorites to capture the 2008 league crown. The Cyclones rank eighth in the conference with a team stroke average of 304.45. Iowa State currently has a 7-4 record against Big 12 conference foes.
“We have a great spring schedule that will pair us with some of the best teams in the country,” Martens said. “The team is excited to begin the season and see how we stack up. “This is the best team we have had, and they are certainly capable of making history at Iowa State.”
In the spring, the Cyclones are looking forward to having the presence of redshirt freshman, Victoria Stefansen. Stefansen, a native of Roervig, Denmark, spent the beginning of September playing back home in the Nykredit Masters in Helsingor, Denmark. The tournament was one of the final events on the 2007 Ladies European Tour. Stefansen, will finally get to tee up a ball for the Cyclones this spring after sitting out the fall season.
“Victoria Stefansen will be a great boost for us entering the lineup this spring,” Martens said.
Iowa State gets its spring season underway of Feb. 9-10, as it travels to Orlando, Fla. to square off against Central Florida.
