AMES, Iowa- Welcome to “Out of the Pool”. Each week, cyclones.com asks two Iowa State swimming and diving student-athletes questions about their competitive aquatic experiences as well as questions on the “lighter side”. Featured this week is senior Kali Fryklund and junior Tien Tran.
Kali Fryklund, Senior, Diving, Eden Prairie, Minn.
Why did you choose Iowa State?
I made a lot of friends on my recruiting trip and felt comfortable around them all, like I was part of the team.
What is your favorite restaurant in Ames?
Legends is my favorite restaurant in Ames.
Which teammate is the funniest?
Kalyn Amundsen always cracks me up.
Which teammate would succeed in another sport and which sport?
Lindsey Behrens, weightlifting or power lifting.
What is your favorite food?
Pizza, taco pizza.
Who had the greatest impact on your athletic career?
My dad helped me greatly during my athletic career. He always calms me down and builds my confidence when I am nervous at meets.
Who is your role model?
Katie Grinnell, my high school diving and gymnastics school. She was also a diver at Iowa State in the nineties.
Tien Tran, Junior, Diving, Greenwood, Ind.
Why did you choose Iowa State?
I fell in love with the campus, and they have a great business school. Also, of all the places I visited, I connected the best with this team, and now they are my second family.
Which teammate would succeed at another sport and which sport?
Kalyn Amundsen, would be a really good runner. Either track or cross country.
In one word, describe Jeff.
Passionate
Who had the greatest impact on your athletic career?
My coach from home, Jason Baumann, helped get me more into diving and coached me from the very beginning of my career. He introduced me to Jeff, and he's one of the reasons I'm here.
What is your favorite sport other than diving?
It's a tie between gymnastics and football. I did gymnastics for eight years and I still love it but I am a huge Colts fan and love watching football.
What is the last book you read?
"Five People You Meet In Heaven" by Mitch Albom.
What is your favorite thing to do when not practicing or training?
I like just hanging out with friends and watching movies. We're really good at movie quotes you could say.
