“Lindsay swam really nice, she was a bit nervous going into the meet because her training has not been where she wants it,” said Sorenson. “She came up with some good times, particularly her 200 back.”
Sophomore Jeli Nixt continued her perfect season in the 100 breaststroke, winning the event in a time of 1:05.54. Nixt swam the breaststroke leg for the winning 200 medley relay team. Nixt has not lost the 100 breaststroke in the five meets she has raced it.
“We tried to have a little different strategy in that race,” said Sorenson. “She said she did not feel like she was working as hard and she had a nice time.”
Junior Frances Calzada tied her season-best in the 50 freestyle (24.16) and swam a career-best in the 100 freestyle (51.99). Junior Lindsey Behrens also picked up a pair of victories in the 200 freestyle (1:56.51) and the 100 butterfly. Senior Marni Benson won the 200 breaststroke (2:23.61).
“Frances' 100 free time was a lifetime best, she had been hovering around the 52-second mark the past couple of years so going under that was great,” said Sorenson. “Lindsey Behrens is a workhorse, she just keeps working hard and I am proud of her.”
In diving, Tien Tran swept the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events for the fourth time this season. Tran's performance on 1-meter elevated her to third all-time in school history, passing Hillary Nichols. Diving coach Jeff Warrick ...
“That was a great performance by Tien, her personal best there,” said Warrick. “I was really proud of her last dive that she has been struggling with and she came through on that one and kept her cool.”
On 3-meter, Tran continued to post some of the best scores in school history with a score of 318.31. Tran now has three of the four highest scores on 3-meter in school history.
Senior Kali Fryklund finished second in both events, including a career-high 278.03 on 3-meter. Sophomore Abby Christensen had a career-best score of 270.75 on 3-meter. Freshman Jenn Botsch set a season-best in 1-meter as well. Warrick said the relaxed environment helped raise scores.
“I think part of it was that they were more relaxed because they were against themselves,” said Warrick. “But I also think that some people added more dives, like Jenn doing her backward two-and-a-half and inward two-and-a-half. Those are things that help raise their score up as long as they do a decent dive. It was a combination of hard work and being relaxed.”
Iowa State returns to action on Friday, Dec. 12 at Iowa as part of the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk series. The Cyclones beat Iowa last season 152-148 in Ames.
