AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State tennis team was defeated by Nebraska, 6-1, on Friday at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center. Friday's match was the Big 12 opener for both teams.
The match started out with Nebraska defeating Iowa State in two out of three doubles matches. The 42nd-ranked doubles partners of Imke Reimers and Jana Albers defeated Erin Karonis and Chrissy Derouin, 8-2. In No. 3 doubles Kara Hickey and Liza Wischer earned the victory over Stephanie Evans and Amber Chandronnait, 8-4, marking the first loss of the season for the doubles pair.
“Kara and Liza played a very tough doubles match,” said head coach Michele Conlon. “They played a very sound and smart match.”
Nebraska's second loss of the season came in No. 4 singles where Caitlin Loprinzi built on her early-season success defeating Stephanie Evans, 6-3, 6-2. Loprinzi improved to 4-0 in dual singles match play this season.
The Cyclones played several tough matches in singles, but Loprinzi was the only one to come out of it with a win. Nebraska freshman Jana Albers earned the victory over Alyssa Palen, 6-0, 4-6, 6-0. Wischer also played a hard fought match, forcing a tiebreaker. In the end, Chandronnait came away with the victory, winning the tiebreaker, 10-8, after splitting the first two sets.
“We have a couple very tough matches next week,” said Conlon. “We are going to have to have a really good week of practice starting Monday.”
The Cyclones go on the road next Friday, taking on the Drake Bulldogs at 4 p.m. in Des Moines. Iowa State will return home on Saturday to take on the Illinois-Chicago Flames at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center at 3:30 p.m.
