AUSTIN, Texas- The Iowa State swimming and diving team finished day three of the Big 12 Championships in fifth place, extending their lead over Nebraska by 19 points.
The Cyclones had another exceptional day in Austin, breaking into the Iowa State record book seven times and setting many new personal bests.
“It was a tremendous day; we carried over the success [of preliminaries] into the finals,” said Iowa State swimming and diving head coach Duane Sorenson. “We had a lot of big upsets today.”
The 200 free relay swam to the third fastest-time in Cyclone history placing third (1:33.24). The relay was composed of Abby Glaser, Frances Calzada, Lindsey Behrens and Marni Benson.
In the 100 butterfly, sophomore Abby Glaser took fourth and set a new Cyclone school record (54.17). Glaser has had an impressive showing so far at Big 12's, taking seventh in the 50 freestyle (23.34) and capturing the second-fastest time in school history during yesterday's action.
“We're absolutely thrilled with Abby's record-setting performance in the 100 fly,” said head coach Sorenson.
The Cyclones continued the success in the 200 freestyle where freshman Jenny Vondenkamp swam a new personal best (1:52.38). Her time ranks as the seventh-fastest in team history.
Freshman Jeli Nixt (1:03.81) and junior Marni Benson (1:03.91) went fifth and sixth in the 100 breaststroke, respectively. Nixt's and Benson's times are personal bests and rank as the second and fourth quickest times in school history.
Junior Lindsay Wegner also swam her way into the record books, finishing the 100 backstroke in eighth (57.16). The finish is new personal best and the sixth-fastest time in school history.
On the boards, sophomore Tien Tran placed fourth in the 3-meter dive (306.85). Tran's performance is a new personal best and is the third highest score in Cyclone history.
“It was great, I knew she had it in her,” said diving coach Jeff Warrick. “She has a great attitude and wants to do well for the team.”
Action will commence Saturday morning with preliminaries in the 200 backstroke beginning at 10 a.m.
