STILLWATER, Okla.-- The Iowa State women's golf team sits in sixth place after the first round of the Big 12 Championship, firing an opening-round 331 at the Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla. Gusty winds of up to 30 mph caused scores to soar, as only 12 of the 60 golfers in the field shot below 80. Host Oklahoma State is the leader after the first day (303), holding a commanding 12-shot lead over second-place Texas A&M (315).
The Cyclones were paced by true freshman Laurence Herman, who shot an 80 to sit in a tie for 13th place. Victoria Stefansen and Karly Pinder are tied for 28th after carding a pair of 83s in the opening round.
OSU occupies the top three spots in the medalist race. Jaclyn Sweeney is in first place after carding a 74, while teammates Pernilla Lindberg (75) and Karin Kinnerud (76) are in second and third place, respectively.
Second round action begins tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. with 18 holes. The tournament will conclude with 18 holes on Sunday.
