STILLWATER, Okla. - The Iowa State women's tennis team was swept by the Cowgirls of Oklahoma State on Sunday, 7-0. The loss brings Iowa State's record to 4-10 in dual matches this season, the Cyclones are 0-7 in conference matches. Oklahoma State moved to 8-7 with the win. The Cowgirls won their first two Big 12?matches of the season this weekend, defeating Iowa State and No. 66 Nebraska.?
To start of the match, the Cowgirls won the doubles point, defeating the Cyclones in two of three matches. The Cyclones lone win on the day came at No. 3 doubles where Liza Wischer and Alyssa Palen earned their first victory of the season, defeating Maryna Tkachenko and Jessica Collins, 8-5. At No. 1 doubles, Erin Karonis and Chrissy Derouin?fought hard in against Jo-Anne Karaitiana and Sasha Belova, but lost the match, 9-7. Kara Hickey and Caitlin Loprinzi were also defeated in their doubles match.
"The momentum really shifted after we were unable to win the doubles point," said ISU assistant coach Armando Espinosa. "We definitely came out flat in singles play after losing the doubles point."?
Oklahoma State was victorious in all six singles skirmishes. At the No. 1 spot, Iryna Tkachenko defeated Karonis, 6-2, 6-2. In the No. 2 slot, Karaitiana moved to 10-4 on the season, defeating Hickey, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 4 singles, Oklahoma State's Belova defeated Derouin after playing a close second set. At No. 6 singles, Wischer, a freshman, was able to keep things tight early on, but eventually lost to Jessica Collins, 7-5, 6-1.?
Iowa State will return to Ames for the first time since March 15, when ISU played host to Texas Tech. On Friday, the Cyclones will play host to the Colorado Buffaloes at 3 p.m. Friday's match will be followed by a dual with the Missouri Tigers on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Saturday's match will mark the last home match for Iowa State's two seniors, Loprinzi and Derouin.
