FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. ? The Iowa State track team won three events Friday under the lights at the Arkansas Twilight. The cool Arkansas night provided good conditions for the Cyclones, who in addition to their trio of titles, earned eight top-three finishes and achieved several personal records.
"This meet was exactly what we needed," ISU head coach Corey Ihmels said. "With the Big 12 Championship meet coming up soon, we needed to see some of our potential realized. All across the board, there were signs of great improvement, and we are currently right where we were hoping we would be at this point in the season."
The women's side was led by Jenna Caffrey, who took sixth in a competitive heat in the 100-meter hurdles. Her time of 13.74 is her best of the outdoor season, and is a regional-qualifying time.
Lashawn Wright showed her dominance on an impressive night, as she won the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.95, her best of the outdoor campaign, and finished second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.90. Right behind her in the 200-meter dash was teammate Monique Hawkins, who achieved a personal best by taking seventh place with a 24.79 effort.
ISU high jumper Tiffanie Synacek, won her event by replicating her jump of 5-7 that she had cleared at the Drake Relays.
The 800-meter run proved to be a strong event for all the Cyclones. Erin Penticoff earned a personal best in the women's race with a time of 2:11.10, which was good enough for sixth place. In the men's competition, James Galvan posted his fastest time of the outdoor campaign with a 1:48.11, which earned third. David Lantz and Michael Alexander also posted personal bests, as they placed 11th and 16th with times of 1:51.61 and 1:52.43, respectively.
The men's surge was led by Hillary Bor, who won the 1500-meter run by knocking nearly eight seconds off of his third-place effort last week at the Drake Relays, to finish with a time of 3:44.30. Jared Lewis ran a 10.67 in the 100-meter dash, which was good enough for third, and was on par with his personal record. In the 400-meter hurdles, Chris Ward showed how far he has come by clocking a 53.61 effort, nearly two seconds faster than his previous personal best. Stefan Tauber also set a personal best with a 23-4-3/4 leap in the long jump.
The Iowa State throwers have been impressive this outdoor campaign. Luke Pinkelman led that effort Friday, as he took second place in the shot put with a throw of 57-9. Pinkelman also earned a personal best in the discus throw, with a toss of 158-5. Pinkelman finished fifth in the event, two spots behind teammate Robbie Utterback who finished in third with a throw of 162-3.
Zac Brouilette earned a personal record in the hammer throw with 183-1, good enough for sixth in the event.
